INTRO TO THE E-RATE PROGRAM
The E-Rate Program or, more precisely, the Schools and Libraries Universal Service Support Mechanism, provides discounts to assist schools and libraries in Utah and throughout the United States with obtaining affordable telecommunications services and Internet access. Four service categories are eligible for funding: Telecommunications, Internet Access, Internal Connections, and Basic Maintenance of Internal Connections.
HOW CAN WE USE IT?
Parents should be aware that if they pay any kind of phone bill that they are actually paying a tax into the USF (Universal Service Fund). That money becomes available to US K-12 schools and libraries. If parents would fill out a FRL (Free or Reduced Lunch) form with their school district it actually gives us the opportunity to get more money for technology equipment. You don't even need to take advantage of the FRL benefits, just go file so we can get more funding! People are paying into this fund either way and if we don't get the money here in our district someone else in some place in the US will get it!
For Example: A Free and Reduced Lunch percentage of 80% at XYZ Elementary School is roughly equivalent to an 80% discount on equipment. So if a brand new school wireless system costs $100,000 then we get it for $20,000!!!!!!.
